How to identify if you are over pronating?

Figure – When viewed from the rear there are 4 toes visible on each side in this image. Normally only 1 or a maximum of two toes should be visible when looking at the feet from the rear. If more toes are visible then it is a sign of overpronation.

The easiest way to tell whether you over pronate is to check for the “too many toes sign”. Stand upright and barefoot on a hard surface, then ask someone to stand behind you. Ask them to look at your lower legs and feet. When looking directly at the back of your feet, they should be able to see one or a maximum of two toes either side of your heel. If they see more than two toes on either side then it is very likely that you are over pronating. There are specific orthotics that can help with this.
